"The Department of Defense (DoD) is currently evaluating the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Order and Authorization, dated January 26, 2011 on the LightSquared Auxiliary Terrestrial Component waiver and anticipates playing a major role in the follow on work. Specifically, the Department supports the decision to establish a working group of technical experts to identify solutions and mitigation techniques to address any potential harmful interference to Global Positioning System (GPS) operations.

DoD's expertise and knowledge of GPS is essential to this process. Given the importance of GPS, DoD has already begun studying this matter to support the forthcoming deliberations and overall efforts. Furthermore, the Department is currently reviewing the operational and technical considerations posed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Public Notice comments on the proposal from LightSquared LLC requesting modified authority for Mobile-Satellite Service / Ancillary Terrestrial Component (MSS/ATC) service.  The Department remains deeply committed to working toward spectrum policy solutions that balance national public policy goals, including national security, and the development of wireless broadband services.”
